Bypass Surgery

Benchmark

The pan-Canadian benchmark specifies surgery within 2 to 26 weeks (14 to 182 days), depending on how urgently care is needed. As there is a lack of comparability in urgency levels, provinces are reporting the percentage of patients treated within six months.

Timeframe

April 1 to September 30

Definition, Population, Exceptions

Population

Age 18 and older * Includes isolated CABG only * Includes all priority levels * Excludes emergency cases * For all priority levels * Excludes days when patient was unavailable

Definition

The number of days a patient waited, from the booking date to the date the patient received bypass surgery. Booking date is when the patient and the appropriate physician agree to a service, and the patient is ready to receive it.

Exceptions

Patients whose urgency rating changed during their wait time are not included in the wait time calculations. This data is not comparable to data from 2013 or earlier.
